Hi Janet,

Here at the Studio it has been both a wonderful and unusual time. Besides relocating the studio to a new space with more potential than any I’ve ever used, it did need quite a bit of renovation. So instead of canvas, this girl have been painting walls, ceilings, doors, plastering, scrubbing…

Oh, and on a more personal note; TJ and I will be welcoming a son into this world any day now :)

However I hope to get back to the easel in a few weeks and I can not wait! I feel like I am exploding with ideas!!

Beautiful documentary

Due to the relocation of our home & studio, it has been quite a while since I have been blogging. (We only moved 20 miles though it feels like I’m now living in a completely different world… in all the best of ways! But more about this later) This week a wonderful model whom I have worked with a number of times before sent me a little documentary on her as nude model. It gave me goose bumps so I just had to share:

Last Sunday the annual international New York ArtExpo came to completion on a high note. Although I have been doing this show for the last 6 years this year was truly exceptional.

I exhibited 43 pieces on 350sq ft white walls… my biggerst NY exhibit so far. And both the public as well as galleries’ reaction was absolutely fantastic. After so many months of hibernation, it is so awesome (and a little nerve wrecking) to be able to put yourself & your work out there. However looking back, it was surely worth every drop of sweat.

This year will be my 6th International ARTEXPO and I know it will be as fantastic as ever. However I also came to realize once again; I am totally in love with my work! I do consider myself to be extremely fortunate to be able to live my passion.

On Friday I did a shoot with Z chel, one of the most awesome models. We ended on a high and immediately I had this incredible craving to go and book ten more shoots. I experience the same with my paintings; the minute I complete a piece on a high, I often just want to grab a heap of canvasses, clear my schedule, postpone sleeping and eating for a week and dive right in.

It’s just like a drug, the more you do it, the more you want. Where is all this going to stop?!

On November 5th from 6-9pm Nan Miller Gallery in Rochester, NY will be featuring some of my latest works in an exhibit titled ‘Celebrating the Arts’. The 2 pieces below will be included in this show. If you happen to be in the area, please stop by!

Besides new works for this show I am currently working on a passionate commission for Cristina in Los Angeles while trying to schedule a last outdoor shoot. This season is changing just way too fast for me to keep up. I was still getting ready for another underwater shoot when I dipped my toe in the water and felt the idea melting away.

On the personal side, I recently started with my 3rd yoga teacher’s course, this time it is the full 200 hour yoga alliance course. I am super excited about this journey and I’m sure it will have quite an influence on my work.

I feel so excited today! The last few weeks I’ve been mostly tied up in commissions and paperwork. Don’t get me wrong, I loved working on my commissions and know it was partly due to my lack of available work. A great problem for any artist!

But today I put a clean canvas on the easel. I just reserved 100 sq ft at next year’s New York Art Expo and plan to spend the next 6 months pouring my heart and soul onto my new canvasses.

Jaarsma Gallery in Potchefstroom, South Africa was the very first gallery that ever exhibited my work. I believe I was a mere 16 when some of my first pieces took a place on their walls. Today, almost two decades later they are featuring my work in a special birthday exhibition.

The opening will be by Rita Swanepoel, an extraordinary woman who supported me as well as my work from the very beginning as well as
during some challenging times. I deeply regret that I cannot be there in person but highly recommend anyone who may be in the area to stop by. This is the first time in almost ten years that I will be exhibiting in my home country and what better way than where it all began.

The opening will be on 19 August 6:30pm at 13 Waterbokln, Potchefstroom, S.A. This exhibit will be up until the 24th of Sept. The will also be exhibiting during the Aardklop national art festival 28 Sept – 2 Oct.

Today I’ve been thinking about the circle photography had made through the years. From the early 1800s when monochrome was the only option and the fist photographs to be considered art were all black and white, to the 1860’s when color photography was a new breakthrough. Though colors may be both advanced and brilliant, today a large number of photographers, including myself, are moving back to black and white.

What is it about the monotone that is so powerful? Patrick Simons says ‘ For reason's I cannot explain, some things simply look better in black and white’ while Robert Duncan explains ‘Because black and white has an inherent dignity… Black and White is both the simplest, and the most sophisticated of photographic disciplines”

I believe colors can be distracting and moving the eye away from the focus. In most things less can be more and in photography this is very often the case.

Washington, DC Sculptures

I just landed back in the studio after a memorable trip to Washington. It was considerable different than my last visit when we were marching to the capital building, banners held high. (But I will not go into the details of that :) Part of what enticed me to cross the Potomac once again was knowing I’ll be able to see Rodin's Crouching Woman in the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden. *Sigh* ...what a piece. One of those that keep spinning round and round in my mind long after I've left. She is probably one of my favorite artworks in the world.

Staying a stone throw from New York ave where Niki de Saint Phall's woman sculptures are displayed didn't hurt either. Though such playful work has never been my main interest, seeing these vivid pieces contrast against the dull backdrop of buildings is a sight that'll stop any passer-by. Think it’s a fantastic way to cheer up such a serious city. Hats of to The National Museum of Women in the Arts for these.

Lastly I have to mention the one non-figurative piece that had my head spinning. I believe it is called “Needle Tower” Its a 60 x 20 x 20” aluminum & stainless steel piece by Kenneth Snelson.

Life Drawings & Inspiration

Often I get questionnaires from students and one of the questions that frequently come up; where do you find your inspiration? Although it can come from many sources, one thing I always have to mention is other artists’ work. Few things inspire me like exceptional art.

This week I started a Live Figure Drawing group and had the privilege to meet some great local artists and observed their talent. That night I went to bed on such a high. The image I share below is of one of my 10 min drawings.

Talking about inspiration, as soon as I get off this computer I am getting into the car to drive to Washington, DC. Oh how I can’t wait to go and feast in the National Gallery and sculpture garden.

Life Figure Drawing -Savannah, GA

This month I am starting a figure drawing group in our home just outside of Savannah!

This group is a place for anyone interested in life figure drawing to come together and create some art. I will be hiring male and female models to serve as subjects. Although there will be no formal instruction, this is not only a place to create art that moves us, but also to meet other artists and learn form each other since there will be time for discussion afterwards. We will meet the last Tuesday of every month from 6 – 8pm.

I have always advocated that drawing is essential for any artist. That it is a fundament that I believe one needs to evolve. And as I recently describe to a friend; I sometimes think of drawing as stripping away all the layers, the color, texture etc. and getting to the core of creation. A place where one cannot really hide anything.

I’ve been drawn back to these roots and had a blast doing a series of charcoal and pastel drawings over the last few weeks. But sometimes when we give creativity free rain it runs in directions of it’s own. Without giving it much thought, I often catch myself sliding into a combination of pencil, charcoal, conté and oils or acrylics. It feels almost like I may be getting the best of both worlds; The simplicity of line with a touch of dept. Also the interaction of mediums I find appealing; areas consisting of line alone almost in a staccato fashion mingling with softer, smoother sections of paint.

We humans are such complex beings perhaps that is why a combination of mediums often feels apt. Or perhaps it is because there are so many sides to the themes I attempt to portray. Whichever the reason, sometimes one should not question to much but just wander where one’s gut feeling leads.

Last Tuesday we left the studio here in Savannah as the sun went down, to see it rise again as Philadelphia appeared on the horizon. Wednesday we did the setup –high on coffee & excitement. Thursday and Friday was the two ‘trade’ days only open to galleries, art dealers, designers etc. Here 8 new galleries from across the US, Canada, Brazil and Korea approached me for representation. Saturday and Sunday was open to the public and also my favorite time of the show. It has been a year since I've personally been at an exhibit and getting all the feedback I got meant the world to me.

11 of my originals as well as a number of giclees sold and the ArtExpo surpassed all expectations. A very sincere thank you to everyone that came to see the exhibit!

Inspiration

I get a number of questionnaires from art students every week and one of the questions that always come up is; ‘Where do you get your inspiration?’ It’s a difficult question since the answer will differ from painting to painting. Sometimes my head is running away with me and I just need an outlet. Other times I see the work of great artists and I feel moved to my very core. I think it’s crucial for any artist not only to spend hours behind the easel creating but also find things that lifts your spirit. So in this exceptionally bust time where I am getting ready for the New York ArtExpo (opening March 25th) this is exactly what I did; spending a fantastic day at the Telfair Museum of Art here in Savannah.

Aidan: Update

Aidan has been an absolute joy. Not even in my wildest dreams would I’ve been able to begin to imagine the amount of love he’d bring to my life.

Art that moves us

In my last post I talked about great drawings being so much more than just the capturing of subjects. The same principal I believe is of course true for paintings as well as all other kinds of artwork.

Today I am asking the question; But what exactly is it about certain artworks that move us? Why do we walk past one artwork barely noticing it while another stops us dead in our tracks? Simon Schama, author of The Power of Art described it well: “the greatest paintings grab you in a headlock, rough up your composure, and then proceed in short order to re-arrange your sense of reality. . . “ Most art enthusiasts can relate to this. But what is the difference between an artwork that causes this reaction versus one that does not? And how about certain work moving one person but doing nothing for another?

The Practice and Science of Drawing

Recently while at the Goodwill, my husband discovered a book called “The Practice and Science of Drawing” by Harold Speed. Though I am merely past the introduction, I was immediately moved. How often do we have ideas and no words to articulate them? Then I find a guy like Harold Speed and it’s like meeting an old friend. Though written nearly a hundred years ago (1917), his words are as true today as ever.

Harold begins by talking about the difference of art that is only technically correct versus art inspired by something deeper, by referring to ‘works showing much ingenuity and ability, but no artistic intention’ ‘The best things in an artist’s work are so much a matter of intuition’ and then he continues explaining that ‘intuitions are shy things and apt to disappear if looked into too closely’

For a long time I’ve found myself trying to explain just this; that there is so much more to art than merely capturing the world. But how do you explain the difference between an artwork created with great talent and masterly precision but a mere replication of the subject versus an artwork in which the artist poured his heart and soul?

Harold says that ‘the facts of life are conveyed by our senses to the consciousness within us, and stimulate the world of thought and feeling that constitutes our real life… Pure intellect seeks to construct from the facts brought to our consciousness by the senses, an accurately measured world… The artistic intelligence is not interested in things from this standpoint of mechanical accuracy, but in the effect of observation on the living consciousness’

‘It is not enough in artistic drawing to portray accurately and in cold blood the appearance of objects. To express form, one must first be moved by it’

It was a beautiful, clear Friday afternoon, a week before our son was due when my husband, TJ and I went out shopping. Suddenly a painful contraction stopped me dead in my tracks. I recall thinking that these Braxton Hicks are surely becoming challenging. I still had a photo shoot as well as a dinner meeting scheduled for the next week. I knew most first time babies are about a week late -especially if he is anything like his Mom.

Around 11pm we were doing our grocery shopping when things were speeding up. In the cereal isle I had one contraction but by the time we got to the soup it already progressed to two. The ice-cream isle was met with three and it was somewhere between the cheesecake and the ice pops when the realization slowly dawned on me; my son just may have his father’s genes and be early after all. By this time TJ already started timing. I was still adamant about completing our shopping, but thankfully my more sensible hubby finally convinced me getting out of there is more important than the dishwashing liquid or the bath tissue.

On August 15th, after another 16 hours of peaceful labor our son Aidan was born.

Original Antoine Art… Tattooed

Last night I had sort of an email crash (I’ll spare you the details). But while sorting out backed up emails, I came upon a photo someone sent me a while ago. All the email said was: “thought you should see this..” with the attached picture.

I assume the person who sent me the email is the person in the photo with the tattoo of one of my paintings. I'm really not sure what to make of it. Do I feel flattered? Glad about the variety of ways my work is displayed? Upset about the copyright infringement? (For a moment I wondered if I could sue them so that they legally have to remove it... imagine) Or should I suggest that next time I do the tattoo myself to get a better depiction of the original? Perhaps I could ask that “© Antoine Art” be added… What do you think?

Nudity & Art

As an artist focusing mostly on nude, figurative work, it is obvious that getting involved in discussions around the good, the bad and the unfortunate of nude art will be a regular occurrence. I believe all who knows me are aware of my passion for honest & human nude art and at the same time my fierce dislike when the figure is displayed in anything but respectful ways.

Unfortunately many have a real challenge distinguishing between, forgive my bluntness, art and porn. I find it sad that beautiful nude art are so often subjected to numerous constraints in order to be shared. It is always very interesting hearing other’s take on this issue and I thought this youtube video from Blunty was particularly interesting;

To prove the point further, below is a slide show of my first underwater shoot that youtube took down due to ‘inappropriate content’ (twice). Though I respect their policy, I find it really sad that at the moment no form of nude art can be shared via this medium.

As Blunty aptly said when talking about nude models “that leaves only the raw exposed truth of what it is to be human and how beautiful that can be. If only we open our eyes to it more often. To accept completely who we are… "

Will this blog ever be the same...

Over the years quite a number of offers to be on the other side of the lens came my way. I am the artist. I love being the artist. There is nothing I love more than being the artist. And various times I had to explain why I had no modeling ambitions.

However when my dear friend Susanna Tanner offered to document my pregnancy, how could I refuse? These photographs were taken when I was about 5 months. It is unfortunate that we moved before Susanna could document the later months.

What artwork moves you?

Since this blog was intended to be about my artwork, I do end up talking quite a bit about me. Well, today that is about to change.

Besides an artist, I am of course also an art lover and thus collector. There are very few things that move me as much as experiencing an exceptional piece of art on a daily basis. When arriving here in Savannah, my favorite artists' artwork were hung long before half the boxes were unpacked. TJ and I often laugh at our dilapidated furniture, however the few art pieces I have managed to acquire leaves me feeling rich beyond measure.

This is some of the artwork in my home that inspires me;

The first is a piece by Tina Mammoser, an artist originally from Chicago currently living in London. I have been fortunate enough to pick this piece up at Tina's London studio and meet her in person after she has been an inspiration to me for many years. I believe Tina is an abstract artist in the true sense of the word. She cycles all over the U.K. -especially the coastal areas and then takes her experiences & visions back to her studio where she captures them in the most beautiful and honest way. This second piece is a glass sculpture by Steve Sizelove. I think most people would agree with me when I say that there is something about glass that is not like any other medium out there. Besides it's beauty and texture, there is something secretive, something so delicately intriguing. To think that before man learned the secret of glassmaking, nature was the world's glassmaker. Lightning striking sand melted it into tubes of glass, volcanoes erupting melted rocks…

This third piece is titled 'Red Gold' and part of an elements series by Anita Lewis who said; "The elements are the hidden treasures of

the earth, and

whether decorative or practical, poisonous or healthy, destructive or useful, they are the road into science, or avenues to the metaphysical."

I've had the pleasure to exhibit with Anita at a series of Art Expos both in New York and Las Vegas. Every time while walking the isles, Anita's work just stopped me dead in my tracks. I do not have the words to explain why, but there is something so touching about her delicate yet powerful creations. Anita's site: AnitaLewis.com

Getting back to work

After arriving in Savannah it has been hard getting back to work. Of course working out of a hotel room had its obvious challenges. This reminds me of the days, many years ago, when I worked out of a hospital bed. I also recall nurses that were not all too impressed with the smells of varnish surrounding my quarters (nor the stains on my bed linen… :)

Although filled with ideas and inspiration, creating a new place from where to create has been an interesting challenge. I never thought about it much; why does it feel great being in one surrounding and just not right in another? Now I am not even going to talk about the challenges being 33 weeks pregnant adds to the whole process of setting up studio...

While working on my new temporary studio, I’ve been spending a lot of time behind the drawing board. One of the most wonderful things about drawings; you can do them anywhere! In the meantime am I also planning a new mixed media (oil, pencil & charcoal) series, which will be the first paintings to be born here in Savannah.

Recently when Andrew, a model friend of mine contacted me in regards to a figure modeling guide he is writing, I immediately knew it was a great idea. There are so many aspiring models out there that I talk to on a daily basis and the same questions always come up; 'where do I start, what should I do, not do….' ?

In The Art Model's Handbook I think Andrew, an experienced life and photography model, really captured a lot of topics essential to both models, artists, art teachers and everyone involved in figurative art.

Southern Inspiration

After just over two weeks in Savannah, I have never had more ideas and inspirations that I am itching to put down on canvas. While strolling through the exceptional, historic squares (and there are 24 of them!) underneath old curling branches decorated with Spanish moss I really feel like I am in a different world. Since arriving here we’ve been living in a Hotel where there is of course little space for easels and canvasses. The preceding weeks have also been filled with preparations and distribution of work to galleries & publishers. Therefore my need for creation is at an all time high. However early June I will be getting back to what I now long for most!

Antoine Art Studio moving to Savannah, GA

After 6 wonderful years in the Midwest, the time has come to continue the journey and go and experience a new part of the country. So in just a few days Savannah, Georgia will be 'home'. Although I have only spent a weekend in Savannah, I was completely taken by the place, it’s energy and charm. Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is of course one of the largest in the US and has a large influence on the city, which is unbelievably rich in history, culture, architecture and beauty. I have found Savannah to be very inspiring and I am sure this will be an amazing new chapter in my work.

Exhibition at Nan Miller Gallery

It's a boy!

On second thought, I should perhaps mention that I am 'with child' before announcing that it is a boy :)

Today I am writing a personal post. However I am sure that this new chapter will also inspire a lot of changes in my work in the years to come. After spending six of the most amazing years of my life with the man of my dreams, we have decided to enter a new phase of our lives together. Therefore if all goes well, TJ and I will welcome two little pink feet into this world in August.

New publishing contract with Encore Art Group

It feels like yesterday when I was heading to my first Artexpo NY and an artist friend excitedly told me ‘just imagine if you get picked up by a publisher!’ Though most artists would jump at the opportunity, the idea kind off scared me. I’ve always loved doing everything myself, so every year when a number of publishers approached me I never really considered.

However when the Encore Art Group (owners of CAP and Winn Devon) recently approached me, I decided to take a step back. Simultaneously being artist, marketer, web and graphic designer, blog writer, editor, publisher, wife… does get a little challenging at times. At the same time the Encore Art Group really impressed me. Besides being one of the biggest publishers out there, they are getting raving reviews from their artists. Today I am in the process of discussing a contract and soon my work will be available to a wider audience through Winn Devon.

What a month!

It was many years ago, but I can still remember clearly how TJ and I sat next to Centurion Lake (in South Africa), drank red wine and ate breakfast. It was a late autumn evening and our first ‘date’, however what I remember most was how we talked about our passion for travel and seeing and experiencing as much of the world as we possibly could.

This month surely lived up to our expectations. We kicked it off in Manhattan followed by a Yogathon in Indianapolis for me while TJ was hiking more than 30 miles in the Smokey Mountains. Last night we returned from a weekend in Toronto, Canada and this coming Thursday we’re flying to Savannah, GA. Finally March will end with a visit to Cincinnati.

Article about my New York exhibition

It was a cool February morning in downtown Manhattan when Antoine stopped in front of the Javits Convention Center with over fifty of her most recent originals. Within 12 hours over 300,000 square feet will be filled with the highest standard of contemporary artwork from over forty countries and the excitement was already building in the air.

From the first day that I arrived I knew that this would be an exhibition to remember. As everyone was setting up I could already sense that the quality of the artwork was better than I had ever seen before. The current economical challenges caused only the best of the best to be able to afford exhibiting at such a prestigious show.

The first two days of Artexpo, the largest of its kind in the world, was only open to galleries and art dealers. It was during this time that Antoine’s work was picked up by a renowned Canadian Art Publisher, six new Fine Art Galleries across the country as well as a number of Antoine’s returning galleries and dealers from previous years. The reaction of the traders to her new body of work was extraordinary and before the show even got underway, Antoine knew it was a success.

As an artist, putting yourself out there can really be a challenge. I spend months in my studio out of the public eye creating, during which I allow myself to forget about the rest of the world and simply turn within. It is also during this period that my canvasses become an integrated part of my emotional journey and expressing what moves me most. Often I get so involved in my work that I find it hard to maintain perspective or to even distance myself. It is quite the contrast after such a time of hibernation to suddenly put myself out there in front of more than 40 000 visitors.

The weekend when the show opens to the public, is the true highlight. Collectors travel in from all over the globe creating a dynamic atmosphere in which Antoine’s work truly stood out and got the recognition it deserves by collectors and art enthusiasts alike. It was therefore only just that Antoine was awarded the Solo Artist Award by Eric Smith, Vice President of the International Art and Framing Group.

I was speechless. Receiving such a big award from such a renowned person caught me completely by surprise and I was both honored and stunned. However the highlight of the week was the public’s reaction to my recent body of work. It was the first time ever that I publicly displayed my photography and I was almost sold out on the first day. Furthermore hearing people talk and connect to my paintings moved me deeply. I am aware that my work is not ‘mainstream’ and often only a small percentage of people are really able to connect to what I create. My aim has always been to visualize the moments I am experiencing, the chapters playing out in my own life rather than creating what is asked of me. But seeing a large number of people connect at such an intense level was an unforgettable experience.

When I become quiet, it usually means I am becoming exceptionally busy. During the last few weeks this was especially true. I completed over 30 new originals all currently on display here at the New York ArtExpo. Today is the second day of this five-day exhibit and so far I am just having a superb show, with more new galleries and more sales this time any year before. However besides the exhibit, TJ and I are also having a marvelous time in the Big Apple, making good use of the variety of restaurants and paining the town red in our free time. Happy days!

My work's new homes

I was quite surprised today when I realized how long it has been since my last blog entry. At the moment I am working night and day on my upcoming New York Exhibition (Feb 26th – March 2). I have decided to take about 30 new originals that have never been shown before. However now that my exhibit is starting to take shape I came to realize that I have once again much more ideas than I will ever be able to execute. But then again, has it ever been different? LOL...

Putting this exhibit together in these challenging economic times has not been easy. In fact I have seriously considered not doing New York this year. However with continuing support and encouragement I have been able to make it happen.

Besides acquiring my work, my collectors have been incredibly encouraging in so many ways. Like this week when I received photos of my work in the homes of two of my wonderful clients, Colette Krelle from Los Angeles and Emile Voyer III from Fort Myers. Some of these I sold as far back as 2003. You can just imagine how special it was to see my work in their new ‘homes’.

I don’t think I can ever thank everyone who has supported me enough. Especially in these hard times I realize most of us are focused on the bare essential and in most books fine art does not fit that category. It has regardless been a very special and memorable year and the beginning of many new dreams.

Touching Email

I get quite a number of emails and spend a significant part of my day corresponding with galleries, suppliers, models etc. But then every once in a while I get an email that stops me in my tracks and reminds my why I chose to do what I do. This recent email from Laura Kathleen was one of those that really moved me. I believe no matter who we are or what we do, it’s crucial for each of us to find an outlet for our creative sides. I am sharing Laura’s message here with her permission;

I thank you for the email you sent months ago and for being an inspirational being in my life. There are some incredible creations in the world -- including your art, many musical compositions and books, and others -- that have been gently reminding me of the importance of letting life guide you toward being your most vital, passionate, and creative self. As a child, I dreamt of becoming a painter. I tried my hand at it several times but did not develop skill in that arena. For years I sadly envied those with such talent. But, I have learned that my creative gifts are in the form of writing and in helping people, both of which draw largely on my intuitive abilities. I realize that it is particularly strange to share all this with someone I haven't met. Yet, I merely wanted to let you know that in this world of six billion people, there is at least one more person out there who cherishes the art you create and is inspired to follow her dreams toward work that stirs her soul as much as your paintings do.

What’s happening @ Antoine Art Studio

It is –5 degrees outside and we’ve already had the first snow of the season. Not quite enough for the nude snow shoot Susanna and I am planning, but just enough to bring the realization of winter home.

During the last week I’ve been putting many hours into building my new website. Keeping track with technology, especially since I don’t work with web design regularly, have left quite a gap in my knowledge and while CSS, PHP and Fireworks are driving me nuts, it does feel good being back on the learning curve.

Besides coding, this week I’ve also had lunch in Dayton with a remarkable art photographer, Dave Levingston. It is just awesome collaborating with talented people sharing one’s passion. I hope to work together in the near future.

David Ford

An incredible part of my inspiration comes from music. My father was a music lecturer and organist all his life and therefore I guess music is embedded in my roots. There is nothing that can put me in the right frame of mind for a certain piece like the right music.

I also spend a lot of time surfing for new music and trying to find artists I can connect with. David Ford was certainly one of my biggest discoveries yet. David, a British singer/ song writer, is unique in so many aspects. Not only does he play all the instruments and does his own recording, but he is also is one of the most honest and authentic musicians I ever heard. Friday night TJ and I were fortunate to catch him live in Covington Kentucky (together with Ingrid Michaelson). What an experience...

Turmoil

About two years ago I created a piece titled Turmoil that Pamela Franks, Art Curator at Yale selected for Indiana University East’s annual juried exhibition. I have always felt that this should become a series and recently when inspiration came, I could not put this off any longer. I worked on these constantly for the last two days and now looking back, I don’t think I could have created anything to reflect my current mood better. This week was the judging of the Richmond Art Museum’s annual juried exhibition (and the 110th one I may add!) by David Kwasigroh. The museum has an open judging where artists may be present during the judging process and even ask the juror questions. I love open judging since it not only provides artists a chance to have their work displayed but also to use it as a learning opportunity.

Of course I’m also thrilled that my photo ‘Below the Surface’ has been selected for this exhibit. It really is so motivating that my underwater work is getting some thumbs up and I hope opportunities to take this further comes my way soon. I also decided to submit it to JPG magazine. If you like it, please don’t be shy to vote! :-)

Back in the Studio

It is good to be back in my studio after spending 10 days in England and Wales.

I have to thank everyone that came to my exhibitions! The feedback I got was just wonderful and I know many people traveled far in order to be there. I really appreciate this very much. I also got a number of messages from people that could not make it to the openings but would still like to visit. Both exhibitions are still up. The exhibit with I2 Art Gallery (26-28 Church St, Saffron Walden, CB10 1JQ) will be on for another month and the exhibition with The Bronze Gallery (63, High Street, Hartley Wintney, RG 27 8NY) will be open until Oct 30. There is also a very nice article in the South African Times about these exhibitions.

We often teach what we need to learn ourselves

‘We often teach what we need to learn ourselves’ this I read this morning in ‘Living Yoga’ (by Christy Turlington) and it got me thinking. I have been fascinated by yoga and it’s mind, body & spirit unity since yoga crossed my path the first time in 2001. This weekend I completed a yoga fundamentals instructor’s course in Chicago. As some may know, I have been a Bodyflow instructor for about a year. I know it is merely the beginning of a long journey, nevertheless one that feels so right.

I am happy to share that I just heard that the photo of Tantila that I included with my last post was indeed selected by juror, Jim Yood professor and art critic from Chicago, for he 30th annual juried exhibition of Indiana University East.

The piece I am sharing today is titled 'Silent Ballet II', inspired by my yoga journey.

Busy times @ Antoine Art Studio

Over the last week I shipped 27 pieces to London, England. I cannot believe that in two weeks from tonight I will be at the opening of my exhibition at I2 Art Gallery. This gallery is located at 26-28 Church Street, Saffron Walden, Essex and will open October 11th 9:30am - 5:30pm featuring 16 of my originals. Shortly after The Bronze Gallery, 63 High Street, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire will feature another 8 paintings and 3 sculptures. The private viewing is on Sunday Oct 12th at 12pm.

Today was also the deadline for entries for Indiana University East’ annual juried exhibition. I entered three pieces including the photograph I share here, another photo of beautiful Tantila.

Nearness

This piece has been inspired by Tantila & Diablo, two models I had the privilege to work with recently. Besides the fact that they are very experienced art models, I think what moved me most was the natural, intimate way they interact with each other. Tantila & Diablo has been together for seven years and while working with them I felt at though their figures just naturally melted together as they became one.

And in this studio the pain of not working (or working on projects away from the easel) exceeds the pain of working quite often.

So often it happens that I have a well planned schedule. I would know which works need to be packaged and shipped, paintings that need to be photographed, do updates on my website… and suddenly inspiration strikes. An idea will find me and refuse to let me be before it came to life. It will climb the ladder to the top of all the ideas I’ve been working on for weeks or months. Within minutes my daily planner is closed, all other work would be pushed back, the music will be turned up and a fresh canvas will see the light. Soon I’ll be lost in a world without time, where neither day nor night exists and only when I become dizzy, will I realize that I forgot to eat. ‘Adrift’ is exactly one of those pieces where I could not stand up once the brushes started moving.

To me the best art is art that one can not only appreciate due to it’s visual qualities, but also due to it moving something deep inside. This is what Adrift did for me while it precisely matched my frame of mind. I hope it may do the same for you.

More Nudes in Nature

In my last post I promised some more of the ‘Nudes in Nature’ that Ben, Callie and I created in Utah. As I worked through the 5 days of shooting, I got a new respect for these two amazing models – especially as I noticed the scrapes and bruises accumulating every day. To put the cherry on top, the last day I asked poor, bruised Ben to go and roll around on the salt flats… imagine!

Coming up
On Saturday I have done the most amazing shoot with Tantila & Diablo from Indianapolis and I have another underwater shoot scheduled with them for this coming Saturday. I am just thrilled with the work we created and will be sharing shortly.

On the Easel

At the moment I am working on quite a number of new works aimed at my two upcoming exhibitions in London. Though I was planning on photographing all my new works next week, I decided to share the piece I am working on right at this moment. This is another piece of Artemis – a pose that gripped me and I just could not leave unpainted.

At the same time I am also working hard on completing the editing of my Utah photos (working through 3919 photos is quite a challenge!) So stay tuned for more ‘Nudes in Nature’ shortly.

Teamwork

Today I am sharing a photo, a young model from Dayton, Ohio who calls herself ‘Italian Kitten’, and I created a while ago.

This was an event I will not soon forget. It was a photo shoot combined with a group figure drawing session. She accidentally went to the figure drawing location first and when I offered to give her directions to my studio, she said ‘hang on, let me give the phone to my mom’.

'Mom?' In the few years I’ve done fine art photography, I’ve had friends, boyfriends, girlfriends and even pets present, but never a mom before. When I opened the door, in walked the model and not only her mother but also her father.

What an amazing team they turned out to be. Her father was a pro in holding and aiming my reflectors while her mother was hair stylist and makeup artist. A team I can definitely recommend!

Staying focused while keeping balanced

This is something I am often struggling with and I can not help but wonder if this is something other artists also find challenging?

Besides figurative oil paintings, I love painting abstracts. I have dabbled in stained glass and etchings. I do metal sculpting, have worked with clay and wood and attended a marble-sculpting course (still have several pieces of marble and limestone calling me). I immensely enjoy drawing, especially life drawing. I studied graphic as well as web design and can get lost for days in front of my computer working on designs. Then during the last few years I started to spend an increasing amount of time on photography; first studio work, then nudes in nature and recently underwater photography. (‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ perhaps?!)

With a variety of interests I often find it really challenging staying focused. Projects will land on my lap that sound enticing; help someone create a business identity, wedding photography, help set up a new website, design a logo, a painting of someone’s child, product photography… In no time I will find myself lost in ventures taking me in directions I feel is not parallel with my core purpose.

While discussing this with TJ he asked me what my mission statement is? This got my thoughts rolling. What is Antoine Art Studio LLC’s mission statement?

This is what I came up with:
‘To create innovative fine art that inspires and moves’

Nude Underwater Photo Shoot

For more than 4 years I’ve hoped that one day I will be able to take my photography under water. Three years ago I already completed my Open Water Divers License knowing that the day will come that I will need it. Ever since I have been searching for both opportunities as well as the budget to invest in the equipment needed to turn this dream into reality.

Last Thursday was my first underwater shoot. In reality it was more like my first ‘test drive’ of this new world below the surface. It still has many obstacles and challenges to overcome, however today I am more determined than ever to explore this much further. As I said before, the more I paint the more I leave unpainted… well, the same is certainly true about the more photos I take...

I would like to sincerely thank Artemis and Sage, the two very brave and willing models I worked with. They were just incredible and we had so much fun that tree hours felt no longer than 30 minutes.

Thought I have not even touch the bottom of the mountain I plan to learn, I do have a few images I decided to share in a slideshow. (Unfortunately the quality of the clip is not very good, so please use some imagination!)

Exhibitions

Wednesday night I attended the opening of the Whitewater Valley Artists Consortium (WVAC) exhibition at Indiana University East. WVAC is a group of professional artists who live and work in the Whitewater Valley region of East Central Indiana. I was one of the co-founders of this group and attending our second group exhibition was a very special event. This exhibition features the work of 13 local artists working in painting, sculpture, stained glass, photography and more. It will be on display at the gallery at Indiana University East until August 8th.

At the same time a number of my originals will be displayed in another group exhibition in New York. This will be together with Allison Corey Fine Art Gallery and opens on July 17th. Anyone who would like to visit either of these exhibitions and need more info, feel free to contact me.

This October I have also been invited to take part in two gallery exhibitions in England. The first as a featured artist at i2 Art Gallery in Saffron Walden, Essex and the second with The Bronze Gallery in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to visit the UK in person over that time since I would love to meet those in the UK who have been such an incredible support to my work.

Nudes in Nature - Utah

As I mentioned in my last post, I have recently spent 5 days in Utah doing outdoor nude shoots. To me this is quite a new chapter in my photography.

Before going any further, I have to thank the amazing models I worked with. Ben and Callie were not only super brave while climbing rocks, getting into cracks and balancing on cliffs, but also put so much of their own creative ideas into the work we did. This truly was a team effort.

Below I am sharing some of the work we created on the first day.

This trip turned out to be so much fun that I am already playing with the idea of doing another this fall. This time I am considering traveling along the Utah/Arizona border. Interested models are welcome to contact me.

Abstract figure drawings

Not long ago I have shared some ideas I have done for Lauren Coburn, a Chicago based interior designer. Today I am sharing the newest conceptual drawings I am currently working on.

This is a phrase that came out of one of my husband’s engineering handbooks. I thought it captured the essence of abstraction so well –I just had to put it up on my studio wall.

Back from Mexico

For those who may think I've fallen off the face of the earth... you may not be too far from the truth!

TJ and I have just spent two absolutely amazing weeks in Mexico’s, States of Yucatan and Quintana Roo. But I think I will leave the details for next time, once I’ve sorted out our pictures.

In the meantime I would like to share some the photos Claudine, a wonderful model from Chicago, and I created 2 months ago (yes, I am that far behind in editing shoots!)

Claudine was such a natural in front of the camera with a uniquely elegant way of posing herself. I was excited when she was willing to drive more than 4 hours to come and work with me and hope to catch her again next time I head north.

Bloggers unite for human rights

Today all over the world bloggers unite for human rights in an attempt to ‘use their space to make the world a better place’.

I so often say that I want to make a difference and I so often feel so powerless against all the devastating things happening all over the world. The truth is that one may be able to break a thread, but not a rope! Small gestures often have a snowball effect and may be the start of powerful things. So today I am joining Amnesty International.

Currently there are two issues weighing heavily on my mind; The first is what is happening today in Myanmar and their government’s unbelievable stubbornness. Lets’ take action and ask the government of Myanmar to ensure delivery of international aid for Cyclone Nargis victims

The second issue on my mind is the genocide in Darfur. Being a child of Africa, some of my roots will always be there and often I am afraid to allow myself to even begin to allow myself to imagine what those people are going through. Today I am asking you to join me in calling on Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to stop delays in much needed aid

The last two weeks in June I will once again auction off several of my artworks for charities of my choice and will of course keep everyone here updated.

Time eludes me!

I’ve made it my goal to post at least once a week and suddenly realized with a shock that it has been 9 days since my last blog post. I am currently working day and night on a new body of work and am completely losing track with time. I guess it is one of the wonderful things about being an artist.

About two weeks ago I had an amazing shoot with Claudia, a wonderful model from the Philippines. I kept thinking my next post would be about her photos, however I think I will keep that for a next time.

Today I am sharing 'Yin Yang' as it progressed. Working on it was one of those magical moments that felt so natural and so right. I’ve been reading up on Chinese philosophy for years. Yin and Yang; can be described as two opposing and, at the same time, complementary aspects of any one phenomenon or simply as ‘unity of opposites’. This is a concept that often comes to mind when I think of various aspects of life. However it has only been recently that it occurred to me to visualize it in terms of a relationship.

Observations of my work

Today I am feeling really excited. I have two really big opportunities on my doorstep, but I think I will rather wait and see if they materialize before I share the details :-)

In the mean time I would like to share a special email sent to me by Anthony Middleton. I always find it really special when someone takes the time to share his/her observations of my work.

Hello my name is Anthony and I'm currently training as a dancer. I was introduced to your work a year ago when I was looking for art as inspiration to create dance, as a college student. I found, and still find, your work extremely interesting and extremely beautiful. Having also read an interview you gave with a website you mentioned that you seem to find that you are drawn to 'vulnerable' and 'emotional' positions. As I observed your work, I found the positions of the subjects quite introverted and suggested sadness. When I look at a lot of your work, it makes me highly reflective and I somehow feel sympathy, in some cases. Is this at all a theme in your work (sadness, reflection)? Can you see this idea in your work too? Another theme that I felt is present in your work, is 'senses'. As I observe your work, I find the subjects almost 'electric', their bodies implying hightened senses, and particularly in work containing more than one subject, I feel almost engaged with their senses, the sense of touch and heat. I would be grateful of any information you can provide for me...I am and will remain a great fan of your work, and am excited to see more of your work in the future.

It is absolutely true that emotionality and the expression thereof plays a big role in my work (you may find my blog post of Jan 31 interesting since there I go into this in more detail) I spent a large part of my life practically living in two worlds, one reflected to the outside and another within. Therein I found a raw beauty in being able to express emotions freely and this as you noted is a theme that regularly comes forward through my work.

Your second observation of ‘senses’ I found particularly interesting. I only really started using more than one subject in my work since I got married in 2002. Most of my work is very personal and is strongly influenced by events in my personal life. Therefore after being united with my soul mate, I could not help but reflect this in my work. Though I strongly dislike in ‘erotic’ work, I have the need to visualize the unity I experience and reading your description of ‘heightened senses’ when referring to this body of work, I thought beautiful.

Life figure drawing

I mentioned that I scheduled a series of life drawing sessions during this month and I completed the second session on Friday. I’ve always loved working with live models. When I were at the New York ArtExpo in March, I promised myself; if the exhibit were to be successful, I would put down a budget for hiring models. Now that this promise is becoming a reality I am enjoying it even more than I anticipated.

Herewith I share a drawing I did of Artemis as well as a photo my friend, Susanna Tanner took.

Advice to aspiring artists

I get several emails every week from students and aspiring artists with various questions on how to become a full time artist. Therefore I decided to share part of an email from Courtney in Canada as well as my reply.

“As my art school career is drawing to a close, I'm becoming more apprehensive about someday being able to make a career as an artist. I was wondering, if you had time, if you could offer me a bit of advice, as someone who has become successful.
I have been told that as a figurative artist, finding a gallery that is interested in selling your work is more difficult. I was wondering if you had to apply to several galleries before you found one that was interested, or if it was relatively easy for you. And finally, I was just wondering if you had any additional advice for someone who is interested in pursuing a career as a fine artist. It would be an absolute dream come true for me, and any advice you could offer would be so appreciated!"

Let’s start with the question on subject matter
I don’t have any statistics, but like Courtney I often heard certain subjects are easier to market than others etc… I simply believe that you should follow your heart in regards to what subject moves you most. To make a career as an artist you need to be in it with all your heart and soul. Not following your heart in regards to subject or trying to create what you believe will be easy to market will be like trying to pretend to be a person that you are not. Yes, there are communities or galleries that will not accept nude work, but there are also many galleries that will not accept other subjects when it does not fall in their theme or style.

Put your eggs in many baskets
I believe in trying to be as diverse as possible. As a full time artist there have been so many times that I did not know where the next tube of paint or the next canvas would come from (never mind the next meal) In time I learned never to depend on one outlet or a single type of outlets but instead to market my work as wide as possible. Today I focus on having a diversity of galleries in a variety of locations, online outlets, I do art expos, I work with interior designers, art agents and I am still looking in diversifying myself further. Through the last 12 years my sources of income have changed drastically and I believe will continue to do so. A very true saying comes to mind; ‘the only constant is constant change’

Getting started.
It's darn hard. Don’t believe anyone that tells you differently. If they do, they’re lying. (Or perhaps they haven’t started with $5 in their back pocket, 5 small tubes of paint, 2 brushes and waist deep in study debt like I did) I think if I weren’t as stubborn as I am, I would have given up a long time ago. Luckily my stubbornness and determination pulled me through the starving times.

I think having a concrete plan is the best place to start. I aimed wildly in so many directions and would have saved myself a lot of time and energy if I were more focused. There are so many possible marketing plans one can discus, but for now let’s just talk about gallery do’s and don’ts since this is where most artists start.

Gallery Don’ts
-Do not walk into galleries with a portfolio under the arm asking for representation. Most gallery owners are very busy and may even consider this rude.
-Do not target just any gallery –there is no artist out there that would fit into every single gallery.
-Do not exhibit in ‘vanity’ galleries. (Unless you have a huge marketing budget and don’t mind taking highly shaky risks) We call galleries that makes their money out of artists instead of art collectors vanity galleries – they usually charges the artist thousands to exhibit there and have little incentive to actually sell your work. (The same goes for ‘vanity’ Internet galleries!)
-Never send work to a gallery on consignment without a proper contract signed by both you and the gallery. I have lost a series of works and I will most certainly not be the first or last artist to lose work. You may also be surprised by how many galleries do not have a contract –almost half my galleries signed a contract that I supplied.

Gallery Do’s
-Always have a number of works available that is recognizable as yours. Exactly what that number is will depend on the scale of your work as well as how prolific you are. But if a gallery is interested in your work, it is great to be able to give them a choice of 15 to 20 pieces. (They will usually start with 2 – 8 pieces)
-As far as possible, visit galleries first to get an idea of what kind of work they exhibit and to make sure your work will fit before you even consider sending in an application. Galleries’ websites may also help.
-If available, get their submission guidelines –different galleries may require different submissions (digital, prints, slides etc.) and always comply with these guidelines. If there is none, send them quality prints or digital files as well as your artist statement, exhibition history (if any), biography and a cover letter.
-Remember that most gallery contracts will state that they will be your only representative in their area. Therefore it is important that you make sure you target the best gallery in a specific city or town.
-Once you get accepted, read the contract several times and ask a friend to read it as well in case you missed something. Never be afraid to ask if there is anything you are uncertain about.
-Most artists starting out cannot afford a lawyer, so contacting some of the artists that already exhibits in a gallery is a great way to verify their ethics. I do this often and usually at least half the artists I contact is kind enough to share their experience.
-Negotiate if necessary. Lately I’ve had several consignment galleries trying to push to get more than the standard commission. They often aim to impress you and tell you just how much of your work they are going to sell. I always suggest to them that we can see how much they sell and then we can renegotiate in 6 months.
-Keep in touch with all your galleries and if you are in their area try to stop by –this will help build a relationship.

I hope that this may help some of the aspiring artists out there! And if there is other artists with more ideas/advice please feel free to add your comments.

Photo shoot with Artemis

Working on images is the last thing I should be doing today, I have a deadline tomorrow and I am days behind. But I just could not stop myself.

Friday I had the most amazing photo shoot and live drawing session with Artemis, an incredible model from Fort Wayne. When we first sat down to discuss the work we are going to do, I came to realize just how perfect she was for what I intended. Most models I work with have some sort of fashion background and since fine art nudes are a world away, it is sometimes challenging explaining the concepts I strive for. However besides being a highly experienced modeling for live art classes, Artemis does yoga, dive and is a complete natural at just being herself. I am so excited about the work we did I just could not leave the images alone. Never mind my initial intention of giving them a week to ‘breathe’.

Here I share one of my first favorites. I expect I will be sharing several more in the days to come.

Andrew’s Perspective on Artistic Nudes

Today I am sharing something my friend Andrew wrote. I really think this is so well said:

"The nude figure is a timeless image, without fashion clues to define the setting in a given time period. With no uniform to define the social class or employment role, nudity also represents honesty and authenticity – the naked truth – and one’s true self without any façade. Nude figures in nature can represent mankind living in harmony with the environment.

While some people associate nudity exclusively with a sexual context, I don't share this mindset. Consider the wholesomeness of Norman Rockwell skinny dipping scenes. Think of fine art nudes by Michelangelo, Auguste Rodin, and Maxfield Parrish."

Some things are timeless

The last two days we’ve had wonderful early spring weather and I’ve been finding the first signs of new life everywhere. However on Saturday the heavens opened and snow covered everything (Including me as I took our dog out)

So while the Indianan weather was living up to it’s unpredictable reputation, I spent the weekend in my basement studio planning some new pieces on request of a gallery group in the United Kingdom. But then I got distracted (as I so often do!) This time it was by the image below, born out of a shoot TJ and I did in December. It drew me in and had me playing around on it for hours ...the next thing I knew was that it was 2am.

I am thinking “Timeless” may be a suitable title. My friend Andrew says that it looks like it has been discovered in someone's attic after 50 years in a trunk. I guess I am hoping that maybe 50 years from now someone will discover it in an old trunk ... or maybe just on an old computer hard drive.

I am planning on doing live figure drawing and painting sessions during April and I can’t wait. I have put up a casting call on Model Mayhem and within the first few days I already got almost a dozen responses. Unfortunately I only have the budget for 3 – 4 sessions and I have no idea how I will choose who to work with first. However this will surely help with some exciting new work.

Below I share one of the photographs RJ Berry and I created during our photo shoot in December. This is one image that got an exceptional amount of attention and have been featured on One Model Place.
